Getting There
How to get to The Jungle House:
1) Take a bus for $14.00 USD from San Jose (ph #2642-0219). The bus leaves San Jose approximately 7AM and 2PM daily, and is Greyhound style with A/C that goes virtually non stop into town. You will need to take a taxi from SJO Airport to "La Coca Cola" bus station (about $20 USD – we can coordinate this for you if you send us an email). The bus takes about 6 hours and will drop you off at The Jungle House. We are located across the street from "Pizza Tomate" - pronounced Toe-Mah-Tay-, so tell the Bus Driver to drop you off at Pizza Tomate in Santa Teresa. The Jungle House is a few minutes North (to the right) once you arrive into the Mal Pais area.
2) Car Rentals: WE CAN PROVIDE GREAT DEALS ON CAR RENTALS so please contact us through the "Reserve Now" page for inquiries.
3) Airport greeting and roundtrip ground transportation from the San Jose Airport: $160 each way (up to 6 people). Email us to coordinate a Taxi Van to pick you up at the airport and take you to the Jungle House. The driver we use is an honest, responsible person named Fabian. He is very personable, and will teach you Spanish on the way to The Jungle House. For starters, beer = cerveza (ser-veh-zuh). You might want to memorize that one!
4) Fly Sansa (www.flysansa.com) for $45pp to $90pp. It is a 30 min jumper flight from the San Jose or Liberia Airport to Tambor, then a 45 minute car ride from Tambor to The Jungle House. Once at Tambor, with advance notice we will coordinate a pick up for $45 USD (up to 3 people). Note: only two surfboard bags allowed per Sansa flight, and no surfboard bag over 7' will be accepted.
Directions to The Jungle House:
Make sure to get good directions at the car rental place as to how to get onto the new highway. Once on the new highway, follow the signs to Puntarenas. Once in the town of Puntarenas, you will follow the main road through downtown Puntarenas until a few streets before the road ends at the gulf. You will make a right, go down a few blocks to the end of the road bordering the water, and then make another right. There should be a line of cars waiting to get on the ferry. Get in the back of the line, and look out for a ferry worker handing out a laminated card for your car. You will take that laminated card to the booth to purchase 1 car and however many passengers you have. The driver and the car must board the ferry alone; passengers will have to walk onto the ferry. The ferry goes to two different towns, so MAKE SURE YOU TAKE THE FERRY TO PAQUERA.
The Ferry (phone #2661-2084) schedule changes frequently, but the current departure times from Puntarenes to Paquera are 5AM, 9AM, 11AM. 2PM, 5 PM, 8PM.
Arrive early since there are long lines at peak times, possibly resulting in the ferry being full and having to wait for the next ferry to depart.
Once off the ferry, follow the signs to Mal Pais and/or Cobono. The sequence of towns will be Paquera, Tambor, Cobono, Mal Pais (Playa Carmen), and finally Santa Teresa. The toughest part of the drive is getting from Cobono to Mal Pais. 10 - 15 minutes past Cobono and right before you reach Mal Pais, is the part you need to drive carefully if you are driving at night or if it's raining hard. This is the part where you are descending the mountain right before you reach the town. You will get to a part of the road that is paved for a short distance. Once you pass that section of paved road, watch out because some sections are muddy and also a small 10 foot section of the road narrows due to being washed out from the rain. This bad section of the road lasts only about 5 minutes, and once past the bad section, you will have descended down the mountains into Mal Pais.
Right as you arrive into town, there will be a crossroads where you will see various business signs stuck into the dirt. You can either go left, right or straight. Take a right at the crossroads, and Santa Teresa is less than 5 minutes by car from the crossroads. Look for the restaurant "Pizza Tomate" on the right hand side, and The Jungle House will be about 20 feet past Pizza Tomate accross the street. Look for a large maroone colored metal door that is about 10 feet long and 7 feet high. The phone number to the house is 2640-0480.
